Boom Boom Shrimp begins with luscious shrimp then fries it tempura-style for a light and crispy exterior, all coated in a spicy Boom Boom sauce. This Southern staple is excellent and may be served as an appetizer, main course, or salad topping.
This is one of my new favorite recipes, friends. I was a little scared by this recipe when I first started testing it. Even though I'm not a huge fan of frying, I discovered that making tempura shrimp was simpler than making regular fried food, and the sauce only took a few minutes to prepare.
This dish is very simple, takes very little time, and was a huge favorite with my family, including my kid who is allergic to spices. Since my initial try, we have made this several times, and neither of us has grown weary of it. It tastes excellent filled in a taco shell or on top of salad, but I really enjoy it as a major meal with rice and vegetables. Delicious!

- adaptable. These boom-boom shrimp have a plethora of uses and are quite tasty. Serve them as a main course or appetizer, or even put them inside a taco or on top of salads!

Main Ingredients
It's surprising how few things you need to make this meal.
For The Tempura Shrimp
- Shrimp. For optimal results, use giant shrimp, which will have a crispy outside and a juicy within.
- Vegetable oil. Perfect for frying shrimp, giving them a crispy, golden brown finish. A good alternative is canola oil, particularly if you have it on hand.
- Egg yolk and flour. This will serve as the batter for the tempura shrimp.
- Water with ice. It's crucial to use ice water in your tempura batter because it inhibits the production of gluten and keeps the crust from absorbing excessive amounts of oil. As a result, the tempura coating remains airy and light rather than overly fried.
For the Boom Boom Sauce
- Mayonnaise. This contributes to the creamy texture of the boom boom sauce.
- Sriracha sauce, ketchup, and paprika. The combination of these three sauces adds a sweet and spicy kick to the mayonnaise-based sauce.
- Cayenne pepper, salt, onion powder, and garlic powder. These will add a little more flavor to the shrimp batter and the boom boom sauce.
How to Make Boom Boom Shrimp
Here's how to prepare this meal of spicy shrimp.
- Get the boom boom sauce ready. Mix the mayo, ketchup, sriracha sauce, sweet chili sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and cayenne pepper in a small bowl. Stir thoroughly and reserve.
- Warm up the peanut oil. Preheat peanut oil to 350 degrees Fahrenheit in a high-sided pot or fryer.
- Prepare the batter for the shrimp tempura. Combine the egg yolks, ice water, and 1 cup of flour in a medium-sized bowl and stir until smooth.
- Fry the shrimp tempura. Dip each shrimp piece into the batter after dredging it in the remaining flour. After adding the shrimp to the hot oil, cook them in batches for approximately three minutes, turning them halfway through, until they are crispy and golden brown. After taking the tempura-fried shrimp out of the oil, set them on a platter covered with paper towels to drain and cool for a few minutes.
- Apply boom boom sauce to the shrimp. Coat the shrimp by tossing them in the boom boom sauce.
- Serve and savor. Serve the boom boom shrimp hot over a salad, as an appetizer, or with rice and vegetables.
Variations and Substitutions
- Air fry. You may air fried the shrimp instead of using tempura batter for a healthier option. Just sprinkle cooking spray on the shrimp and air fried them for 8 to 10 minutes at 400 degrees Fahrenheit, turning them over halfway through.
- Try a different sauce. Try out a variety of sauces. Yum yum sauce and bang bang sauce are excellent substitutes for this traditional boom boom shrimp, however somewhat different.
- Turn it into a vegetarian meal! For a vegetarian variation of this meal, use cauliflower florets or tofu instead of shrimp.
- Dip rather than coat. Another option is to just cook the shrimp and serve the boom-boom sauce alongside them if you're serving them as an appetizer. It's excellent as a dipping sauce.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, you may prepare the boom boom sauce ahead of time and keep it in the fridge for up to a week in an airtight container. This sauce pairs well with various foods, so I love to make two batches. It's the ideal dipping sauce for sweet potato fries, french fries, or chicken tenders.
Indeed! In fact, I often use the shrimp from Costco's freezer area. Before dipping the shrimp into the batter, take careful to defrost them and pat them dry.
Any leftovers can be kept in the fridge for one to two days in an airtight container. I've found that reheating them in the air fryer works best, but you may also put them on a sheet pan and bake them at 385 for 20 to 30 minutes, or until the shrimp are thoroughly cooked and they crisp up again.
