Ingredients
You only need a few basic items!
- Brown sugar is, without a doubt, the star of the show! Brown sugar contains molasses, which is responsible for its richer flavor and caramel undertones. I prefer dark brown sugar to light brown sugar since it contains more molasses, but either would work.
- Water: To make any simple syrup, simply combine sugar and water in a 1:1 ratio. It's really easy!
- Vanilla extract: I enjoy adding vanilla extract to make things even more tasty. This one is my favourite.
- Optional: If you want some cinnamon notes in your syrup, add a couple cinnamon sticks while it is cooking!
For storage, I use these 12 oz. mason jars with lids.
Step-by-step instructions
- Using a wooden or silicone spoon, thoroughly mix the brown sugar, water, and vanilla essence in a small pot.
- After bringing the ingredients to a boil, quickly reduce the heat to a simmer.
- Simmer for ten to twelve minutes, stirring now and then. Note: Simmer for only 5 minutes if you're pressed for time, but a longer simmer time will result in a deeper flavor.
- After taking the pan off of the stove, let it cool down before transferring it to an airtight container or mason jar for storing.
- Add to your preferred tea, coffee, or any other beverage that you usually use sugar to sweeten.
Uses for brown sugar simple syrup
Although there are a lot of uses for brown sugar syrup, I really enjoy using it for coffee.
- Brown Sugar Coffee: Every morning, I prepare my iced coffee using brown sugar. It is comparable to a high-end coffee from your preferred coffee shop! Add coffee, ice cubes, cinnamon, and a small amount of brown sugar syrup to your preferred milk. Use plant-based milk, whole milk, or whatever you usually use!
- Make a brown sugar oat milk latte by mixing espresso shots with brown sugar syrup and creamy oat milk. After adding some syrup to the oat milk, create a cool foam topping with a milk frother and sprinkle cinnamon on top!
- Hot coffee: Simply pour in your preferred milk or cream, as well as as much syrup as you like, based on your own tastes. Another option is to use instant coffee rather than brewed.
- Hot tea: Brown sugar syrup tastes great in hot (or cooled) tea, just like it does in coffee!
- Mocktails and cocktails: This syrup can be used in any preparation that asks for simple syrup.
- Oatmeal or overnight oats: To add a new taste, try using brown sugar syrup in place of ordinary sugar, honey, or maple syrup to sweeten your oats.
- Your favorite morning foods, such as pancakes, waffles, or french toast, would taste great with a drizzle of syrup.
- Cake or muffin topping: For a moist, sweet finish, brush syrup over the top of cakes, breads, or muffins. This would be ideal for a banana bread with chia seeds.
- Meats: You can also glaze steak or chicken with this!
Recipe FAQ
For optimal freshness, use your syrup within a week or two.
White sugar can be used in the same way to generate a basic syrup, but the flavor profile will be different. Molasses, which gives brown sugar its richer flavor and brown hue, is a component of brown sugar.
Depending on your taste, I find that adding 1-2 teaspoons of this syrup to my coffee is enough to add sweetness and flavor.
As a registered dietitian, I definitely support reducing additional sugar. However, it's also important to enjoy what you eat and drink, and I opt to add a little sugar to my morning coffee to make it more satisfying. I would rather concentrate on moderation and mindfulness than removal.
Simmer your syrup with two to three cinnamon sticks if you want cinnamon flavors in your brown sugar cinnamon. Instead, I suggest adding a dash of cinnamon directly to your coffee for a more potent cinnamon flavor.
