Simple Ingredients
This quick crockpot smoked sausage and potato recipe requires only a few ingredients. The full proportions are listed on the printable recipe card below.
- Smoked sausage – I normally get kielbasa smoked sausage or smoked polish sausage from our local Polish grocery store, but any smoked or ore-cooked sausage would do. If desired, use turkey or chicken sausage. In this recipe i used merguez sausage.
- Baby potatoes, Yukon gold potatoes, or red potatoes.
- Salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder—for seasoning.
- Butter
- Fresh green beans are optional, but make it a one-dish feast. You can use frozen green beans, but I would avoid canned green beans because those are overcooked.
- Use olive oil or nonstick spray to coat the bottom of the crockpot.
The first time I made kielbasa and potatoes in the slow cooker, I used one pound of both. That wasn't enough for us, so the following time I cooked this simple meal, I added 1 pound of potatoes and 2 ropes of sausage.
How to Make Slow Cooker Sausage and Potatoes
- The tiny potatoes should first be rinsed in a colander with cold water and patted dry. Cut them into quarters after that. Cut smaller potatoes in half.
- Next, cut the smoked sausage into rounds that are roughly half an inch thick. Wash and trim the fresh green beans if using them. Unless you prefer them really soft, you won't need them straight away if you are cooking on low heat.
- Put a small amount of vegetable or olive oil in the slow cooker's bottom. Alternatively, apply nonstick cooking spray to the bottom.
- After that, season the potatoes with salt, pepper, onion powder, and garlic powder before adding them to the slow cooker. Coat with the seasonings by stirring.
- Add the slices of kielbasa. Lastly, drizzle some butter over the top.
Cooking Time
The sausage and potatoes in the crock pot can be cooked on either high or low heat. Cook until the potatoes are fork-tender, 3 to 4 hours on high heat and 6 to 8 hours on low heat.
Add the fresh green beans approximately two hours before you're ready to eat if you want to and you're cooking on low. They might be overcooked otherwise.
When finished, quickly whisk the sausage mixture. After that, savor this straightforward dish of delicate potatoes and succulent, expertly seasoned kielbasa sausage. Excellent!
Storage
Keep any leftover potatoes and smoked sausage in the refrigerator in an airtight container. The shelf life of leftovers is three to five days. This simple crockpot recipe is also a wonderful freezer dinner for extended preservation. It reheats nicely if you simply store it in a freezer-safe container.
Recipe Tip
If you are cooking on high, you can add the green beans at the start of the cooking time. If cooking on low, add them in the last two or three hours to prevent overcooking.
Frequently Asked Questions
Make use of waxy potatoes, which have less starch and won't crumble when cooked for a long time. Red potatoes, fingerling potatoes, baby potatoes, and more are available as waxy potatoes.
Onions or bell peppers of any hue, diced to comparable sizes, could be included as vegetables.
To add even more spiciness to this recipe, you might search for several sausage varieties. In addition to the Cajun flavor, you can add some red pepper flakes or cayenne pepper.
Because the potatoes would turn discolored before cooking, this recipe would not be ideal for meal prep in advance. The leftovers, nevertheless, will keep nicely!
With kielbasa sausage, especially turkey kielbasa, I adore this recipe. However, any other kind of sausage will work, such as andouille sausage, beef kielbasa, smoked sausage, and Italian sausage (beef, chicken, or turkey sausage varieties).
You can choose to brown the meat before putting it in the crockpot. In order to keep my recipes as simple and one-pot meals as feasible, I usually omit this step.
